The Metropolitan Junior Golf Program, Inc.

The Metropolitan Junior Golf Program (MJGP) was organized in 1993 at the current site of the Metropolitan Golf Links when it was known as the Lew Galbreath Golf Course.  The Program is a non-profit organization that was certified as a 501(c)(3) corporation in the following year.   (Tax ID 94 - 3301366)

Our primary goal is to offer a program to teach and develop qualities such as integrity, self-esteem, and responsibility to the inner city youth of Oakland and the surrounding communities.  At the same time we seek to teach kids golf as the vehicle to achieve positive attitudes.

Our Program meets every Saturday from 8:00 to 10:00 AM at Metro Golf Links.  The curriculum consists of a class instruction on life skills and golf course etiquette and rules.  Our course instruction includes ball striking, chipping and putting.  The students are also taught course management, self discipline, and how to make the correct choices on and off the golf course.

All of the instruction is free along with uniforms, balls, and golf clubs.  We also provide financial support for our better golfers to attend and compete in tournaments all over the US.   None of our instructors nor Board members receives any pay for their volunteer efforts.  We exist entirely on charitable donations.  While the program is free to those that participant, parents are expected to fundraise for the organization.

In the past we have received grants from the NCGA Foundation and donations from Callaway Golf, Nike, and Footjoy.  We only ask parents to contribute an annual $6 fee for each child that participates in the program to cover the child’s Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) dues.  Any financial assistance that we receive is greatly appreciated.  Please feel free to contact one of the Board of Directors if you desire additional information on the Metropolitan Junior Golf Program.
